G Herbo built his reputation on Chicago's drill scene with a rawness and lyrical depth that set him apart early on. His debut mixtape Welcome to Fazoland, named in honor of a friend killed by gun violence, drew critical attention for proving that drill could carry real storytelling weight. Drake cosigning him and Lil Bibby as "the future" didn't hurt either. Collaborations with Nicki Minaj, Chance the Rapper, and Common followed, and XXL eventually put him on their 2016 Freshman Class cover after he famously called them out with a diss track the year before. His 2017 studio debut Humble Beast landed to strong reviews, and he kept building from there. The 2020 album PTSD cracked the top ten of the Billboard 200 and led to a deal with Republic Records. Since then he has kept a steady output, releasing 25, Survivor's Remorse, Big Swerv, and most recently a self titled project called Lil Herb, nodding back to his original rap name.
