About
Gabriel Cassaro is a Brazilian born bassist and composer who blends contemporary jazz with the music of his homeland. His band, A Oficina, is a modern jazz quintet that plays his own compositions alongside fresh takes on classic Brazilian repertoire. You can hear the pull of Brad Mehldau and Milton Nascimento in the writing, two quite different reference points that sit comfortably side by side. The group moves between composed material and open improvisation, and it leaves plenty of room to wander off in new directions mid song. A Oficina reached the finals of both the Erasmus Jazz Prize and the Laren Jazz Prize, and the band has played at LantarenVenster in Rotterdam and at Contra in Amsterdam. Cassaro is active in the Rotterdam jazz scene.
