Puerto Rican singer songwriter Gabriel Rios has built a devoted following in Belgium and beyond with a sound that has shifted from Latin inflected hip hop and rock to stripped back acoustic songwriting and, more recently, Spanish language Latin American folk. His debut album Ghostboy, produced by Jo Bogaert of Technotronic fame, landed in 2004 and put him on the map across Belgium, the Netherlands and France with the single "Broad Daylight". A European Border Breakers Award followed in 2007 for his second album Angelhead. The single "Gold", released in 2013, became a genuine hit in Flanders and picked up extra momentum when an unauthorized tropical house remix by Thomas Jack went viral. It won Hit of the Year at the 2014 Music Industry Awards. His fifth album Flore from 2021 went in a different direction entirely, collecting Spanish reinterpretations of Latin American and Caribbean songs, including a duet with Devendra Banhart. Recent uploads suggest he has been back at work, with new material including "La bolsa" appearing in 2024.
