Pop music is basically the soundtrack of everyday life, it’s the stuff you hear on the radio, in stores, or stuck in your head after one listen. The word “pop” literally comes from “popular,” and the genre really took shape in the 1950s in the US and UK. It grew out of earlier styles like rock and roll, jazz, and blues, but was designed to be more accessible and catchy for a wide audience. What makes pop stand out is how easy it is to listen to, think simple song structures, strong rhythms, and those choruses you can’t help but sing along to.

As time went on, pop became super flexible and started mixing with pretty much every other genre out there. That’s why you’ll find pop songs influenced by rock, hip hop, dance, and even country all at once. Big artists like Michael Jackson, Madonna, and more recently Taylor Swift and Beyoncé have all helped shape what pop sounds like in their own eras. Even though the sound keeps changing, most pop songs stick to a familiar formula with catchy hooks, relatable lyrics about love or everyday life, and a polished sound that feels radio ready.

There are also some fun bits of history behind it. The term pop music wasn’t even widely used until the 1950s, when people needed a way to describe this new wave of mainstream music. MTV completely changed the game in 1981 by making music videos just as important as the songs themselves, and stuff like Auto Tune, originally invented for oil research, ended up shaping modern pop vocals. At the end of the day, pop keeps reinventing itself with every generation, which is probably why it never really goes out of style.
