Gabriele Mirabassi is an Italian jazz clarinetist from Perugia whose path into jazz was anything but straightforward. His conservatory teacher warned him off the genre entirely, fearing it would ruin his classical technique, so he quietly taught himself at home on the piano, playing along to his father's records. That roundabout route clearly paid off. He has built a substantial catalogue on the Egea label, with albums stretching from his 1995 debut Fiabe through to releases in the 2000s, and he returned with Chamber Songs on CAM Jazz in 2019. His work spans collaborations with the Lebanese oud player Rabih Abou Khalil, appearing on two Enja Records albums, and a 2013 stint performing with harpist Edmar Castañeda at French festivals and a choro event in Brazil, which hints at the breadth of his musical curiosity.
