Kai Hansen founded Gamma Ray in Hamburg in 1989, shortly after leaving Helloween, the band he had helped build into a power metal institution. From the start he was the driving creative force, handling guitar, lead vocals, and most of the songwriting. The early records leaned close to the Helloween sound, though the second album Sigh No More took a noticeably darker turn, its lyrics shaped by the Gulf War raging at the time. When original vocalist Ralf Scheepers departed around 1995, Hansen stepped up to the mic full time, and the resulting album Land of the Free became a landmark, arriving at a moment when this style of metal was widely written off as dead. Between 1990 and 2014 the band put out eleven studio albums, cementing their reputation as one of the most consistent names in European power and speed metal. The lineup shifted fairly often over the years, but Hansen remained the constant anchor. Recent activity includes material from 2022 such as 'Send Me a Sign' and 'Anywhere in the Galaxy', suggesting the band is still very much in the game.
