About
Also known as: Garry Bartz
Gary Bartz has been one of the most versatile and in demand saxophonists in jazz since the 1960s, cutting his teeth alongside Charles Mingus, Eric Dolphy, and McCoy Tyner before joining Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. His tenure with Miles Davis in 1970 put him on some landmark recordings, including Live Evil and the celebrated Cellar Door Sessions, where Davis was pushing jazz into wilder, electric territory. Bartz matched him every step of the way. His own band Ntu Troop blended jazz with funk and soul, and his range as a sideman spans an extraordinary cast of collaborators from Max Roach and Woody Shaw to Roy Hargrove, whose Latin jazz project Habana earned Bartz a Grammy. A second Grammy followed for McCoy Tyner's Illuminations. He now holds a professorship in jazz saxophone at Oberlin College, and in 2019 he marked fifty years of his album Another Earth at Winter Jazzfest alongside Pharoah Sanders.
