Gary Burton essentially rewrote the rulebook for the vibraphone. Where most players used two mallets, he developed a four mallet pianistic technique so distinctive it became known as the Burton grip, now standard among jazz vibraphonists and even some classical marimbists. He was DownBeat's Jazzman of the Year in 1968, the youngest ever to earn that title, and went on to win multiple Grammy Awards across a career spanning decades. His 1967 quartet record Duster blended jazz, country, and rock well before fusion had a name, and his forty year duo partnership with Chick Corea is widely credited with popularising the jazz duet format. He worked alongside Stan Getz, Pat Metheny, Astor Piazzolla, Keith Jarrett, and a long list of others, and spent thirty years shaping the next generation of musicians at Berklee College of Music. Burton retired from performing in 2017 after a farewell tour with pianist Makoto Ozone.
