Gary Willis is the kind of bassist who makes fretless five string feel like a language rather than a technique. Best known as co founder of the jazz fusion band Tribal Tech alongside guitarist Scott Henderson, he spent years helping shape a sound that cut through blues, jazz, and rock in ways that still influence fusion players today. Beyond Tribal Tech, he has played alongside heavyweights like Wayne Shorter, Dennis Chambers, and Allan Holdsworth. His solo catalogue is genuinely substantial. From No Sweat in 1996 through to Larger Than Life, released on Abstractlogix in 2015, each record finds him pushing a modern jazz, funk, and groove sensibility. He also brought that energy to the trio Slaughterhouse 3 with drummer Kirk Covington and saxophonist Llibert Fortuny. On top of performing and recording, Willis has written four instructional books for Hal Leonard, covering topics from fingerboard harmony to ear training, and he teaches at Berklee's campus in Valencia, Spain.
