About
Gemma New made history several times over before most conductors hit their stride. The New Zealand born conductor became the first woman to serve as music director of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, the first to open a St. Louis Symphony season, and the first to hold the principal guest conductor title at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. She now leads the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra as principal conductor, again a first for a woman in that role. New built her reputation through a mix of bold programming and a commitment to new music. She founded the Maryland collective Lunar Ensemble and used it to premiere 26 compositions, which tells you something about where her priorities lie. Along the way she picked up fellowships with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under Dudamel and a Kurt Masur conducting fellowship, and in 2021 she received the Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award. In 2024 she was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her work in music direction.
