About
Geneva Camerata is a chamber orchestra from Geneva with a reputation for pushing classical music well outside its usual boundaries. The New York Times noted that the ensemble has changed the rules of the classical music world, and it is easy to see why: members move around the stage while playing, and the orchestra has been known to invite skateboarders on stage for a duet. Their production Revolta is a good example of how they work, pairing Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony with krumping, an explosive freestyle dance style that originated in the streets of Los Angeles. The connection they draw is not superficial: both the raw energy of krumping and the charged musical language of Shostakovich speak to breaking free and to acts of will.
