George Clinton built one of the most distinctive sounds in American music through his Parliament Funkadelic collective, a sprawling, shape shifting outfit that fused psychedelia, Afrofuturism, and outrageous stage theatrics with deep, heavy funk throughout the 1970s. At their peak, Parliament and Funkadelic racked up more than 40 R&B hit singles, three number ones, and three platinum albums, with Clinton standing alongside James Brown and Sly Stone as a defining force in the genre. His 1982 solo debut Computer Games delivered the R&B chart topper "Atomic Dog", a track that later became one of the most sampled records in hip hop history, helping shape the G funk era that Dr. Dre and others would ride in the 1990s. Clinton also produced the Red Hot Chili Peppers album Freaky Styley in 1985 and wrote the theme for The Tracey Ullman Show. He and Parliament Funkadelic received Grammy Lifetime Achievement Awards in 2019.
