About
Also known as: George Dalaras, George Dalares, George Dallaras, Giorgos Dalaras, Giwrgos Ntalaras, Yorgos Dalaras
With close to 90 solo albums and sales topping 18 million copies worldwide, George Dalaras is about as central to Greek music as it gets. Born in Piraeus, he built his reputation on laiko and rebetiko but never stayed in one lane, stretching into pop, rock, Latin, Byzantine, classical, and opera over a career that spans decades and dozens of languages. The scale of his live work is genuinely staggering: two back to back shows at the Olympic Stadium in Athens in 1983 drew over 160,000 people, which Rolling Stone called the moment Greek music entered the era of big stadiums. He has played Radio City Music Hall, the Sydney Opera House, Madison Square Garden, and the Royal Albert Hall, among many others. His collaborations read like a serious list: the Metropole Orchestra, the Deutsche Oper Berlin choir, and fellow performers at Amnesty International concerts alongside Peter Gabriel, Sting, and Bruce Springsteen. In 1994 he received the Kennedy Award from Senator Edward Kennedy for his humanitarian work, and in 2006 the UN appointed him Goodwill Ambassador for its Refugee Agency. For anyone curious about the depth and range that Greek popular music can carry, Dalaras is the place to start.
