About

Gerald Finley is a Canadian bass baritone whose voice the New York Times once described as a "bass baritone of easy luxury", and whose feel for text has made him one of the most thoughtful singers of his generation. Born in Montreal, he's built a career spanning Mozart, Wagner, contemporary opera and the German lieder tradition, with a particular gift for characters that need both vocal weight and comic or dramatic edge. His Mozart interpretations, especially Don Giovanni, Count Almaviva and Papageno, have anchored productions at Salzburg, the Met and beyond. Finley created the role of J. Robert Oppenheimer in the world premiere of John Adams' Doctor Atomic at San Francisco Opera in 2005, a role he reprised at the Met three years later. He's also originated roles in Mark Anthony Turnage's The Silver Tassie and Tobias Picker's Fantastic Mr. Fox. On disc, his Hyperion solo albums cover Schubert's Winterreise and Schwanengesang, Schumann's Dichterliebe, and songs by Barber, Ravel and Ives. He holds both the Order of Canada and a CBE for services to opera.
