About
Also known as: Gerardo Azevedo
Geraldo Azevedo is a Brazilian singer, songwriter and guitarist whose work sits at the heart of MPB, the broad and eclectic Brazilian popular music movement. He is especially known for his creative partnerships with Alceu Valença and Zé Ramalho, collaborations that helped shape the sound of a generation. Their joint work began as far back as 1972, when Azevedo and Valença released a shared album, and the chemistry never really faded. Over the decades he has built up a substantial catalogue, ranging from intimate solo records to the celebrated O grande encontro series, a run of live and collaborative albums he put out across the late 1990s and early 2000s. His style weaves together forró rhythms with the broader singer songwriter tradition of MPB, giving his music a warmth that feels both rooted in the northeast of Brazil and open to the world.
