About
Also known as: Gewandhausorchester, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra
With roots stretching back to the 15th century, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig is widely regarded as the oldest civic orchestra in Germany and one of the oldest symphony orchestras in the world. Based in Leipzig, it grew from a wealthy merchants' association into a city institution and has been under the stewardship of Leipzig since 1840. With around 175 musicians, it is also considered the largest professional orchestra on the planet. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy served as its Kapellmeister, and throughout the 19th century the orchestra gave premieres of works that are now cornerstones of the classical repertoire. What sets the Gewandhausorchester apart is its famously distinctive sound: restrained, warm in tone, and refined in ensemble playing. Since 2018, Andris Nelsons has led the orchestra as chief conductor. The ensemble also serves as the orchestra of the Leipzig Opera, and the acoustic legacy of its historic concert hall influenced the design of venues like the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and Boston Symphony Hall.
