About
Also known as: Ghis Poirier, Ghislain Poirer, POIRIER
Montreal producer Ghislain Poirier, who records and performs as Poirier, has been quietly building one of the more eclectic catalogues in Canadian electronic music since the early 2000s. Signed to Ninja Tune, he started out in the minimal techno world alongside Tim Hecker and Deadbeat before pivoting hard toward dancehall, soca, tropical bass and grime. His 2007 album No Ground Under marked the shift, leaning into Caribbean sounds with vocalists like Face T and MC Zulu. His remixes have covered a remarkably wide range, from Clipse and Lady Sovereign to Bonde do Rolê and Pierre Lapointe. Beyond the studio, Poirier made a serious name for himself in Montreal through his Bounce Le Gros club nights, where he mashed up ragga, booty house, Baltimore breaks and hip hop for increasingly large crowds. He also co organized the Bridge Burner outdoor parties, which grew from a scrappy illegal gathering on St Jean Baptiste Day into a full blown event backed by Pop Montreal and Red Bull. His discography now stretches to more than a dozen releases, with the album Quiet Revolution landing in 2024.
