Ghostemane, the project of Florida born Eric Whitney, built his reputation by smashing trap beats and heavy metal together in a way that felt genuinely new rather than gimmicky. His SoundCloud following blew up on the back of that collision, but the moment that really put him on the map was the viral cartoon edit of "Mercury: Retrograde", set to a 1933 Betty Boop short featuring Cab Calloway. That video has racked up over 500 million views and remains his signature track. His 2018 album N/O/I/S/E pushed further into industrial metal territory, drawing on the sounds of Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson and Slipknot. Lyrically, Whitney gravitates toward occultism, nihilism and death, threads that run through his whole catalog. Beyond Ghostemane, he keeps several side projects alive, including Baader Meinhof for lo fi black metal and GASM for noise music, with Bathory cited as his single biggest influence. His 2020 album ANTI ICON and the "AI" video, nominated at the Berlin Music Video Awards in 2021, showed he had no interest in standing still.
