Oakland's Ghoul have been lurking in the underground since 2001, hiding behind masks and stage names like Digestor, Cremator, Dissector and Fermentor. Nobody officially knows who they are, though their members have connections to bands like Exhumed, Impaled and Morbid Angel. They describe themselves as mutants from a place called Creepsylvania, and the whole mythology feeds into their lyrics, which follow a rotating cast of weird characters including a Curio Shop Owner, a Swamp Hag and something called the Mutant Mutilator. Musically, they grind thrash and death metal together into something Kerrang! once called "cannibal thrash", which pretty much nails it. Five studio albums in, they've toured alongside Gwar, played Maryland Deathfest, and teamed up with Cannabis Corpse for a run through Europe. More recently they put out the single "Nazi Smasher" in 2020, and a new EP called Noxious Concoctions dropped in 2024.
