Giovanni Sollima is one of those rare musicians who moves just as fluently between a centuries old Ruggieri cello and the rhythmic pull of rock and jazz. The Palermo born composer and cellist draws on Mediterranean folk traditions, minimalism and modal structures, blending them into something the critic Kyle Gann tagged as postminimalism, a step beyond the early American minimalists in its eclecticism and range. He teaches at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and performs on a Francesco Ruggieri cello made in Cremona in 1679. His catalogue spans operas, ballets, chamber pieces and installations, and he has worked alongside Patti Smith, appearing on her records and sharing stages with her. He is also part of the Silk Road Project. Albums like We Were Trees on Sony and Aquilarco on Polygram give a decent sense of how restlessly his music shifts between worlds, never quite settling in any single genre.
