Few bands defined the New York hardcore sound quite like Gorilla Biscuits. Formed in 1986 and signed to Revelation Records, they put out their self titled EP in 1988 and followed it with Start Today in 1989, an album that became the best selling release in Revelation Records history and the first the label ever issued on CD. That record cemented their reputation as one of the most essential acts in the youth crew movement, blending tight, melodic hardcore with a straight talking energy that still resonates decades later. The band split around 1992, with vocalist Civ going on to front CIV and guitarist Walter Schreifels forming post hardcore outfit Quicksand. Gorilla Biscuits reunited periodically over the years, including a full month long reunion tour in 2006 to mark the remastered reissue of Start Today. They have kept playing since, with Charlie Garriga stepping in on guitar after the passing of Alex Brown in 2019. Their catalog remains a touchstone for anyone serious about hardcore.
