About
Also known as: GSO
Founded in 1862, the Göttinger Symphonieorchester has spent well over a century at the heart of cultural life in Göttingen, Germany. Known informally as the GSO, the orchestra has shared the stage with some serious heavyweights over the years, from Richard Strauss and Georg Solti to Martha Argerich and Gidon Kremer. Violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann has been an honorary member since 2001. With more than 100 concerts a year, the GSO covers everything from Baroque to contemporary premieres, earning a reputation as the travelling orchestra of Lower Saxony through regular appearances at festivals across the region and beyond. A 2017 tour took them all the way to China. They also bring live orchestral music to kindergartens, schools, hospitals and care homes, which says a lot about how seriously they take reaching people outside the concert hall.
