About

Also known as: Grand Puba Maxwell, Maxwell Dixon

Grand Puba, born Maxwell Dixon out of New Rochelle, New York, built his name as the lead voice of Brand Nubian before stepping out on his own and becoming one of the more distinctive MCs of the 1990s East Coast hip hop scene. His time with Brand Nubian produced the classic debut One for All in 1990, but it was his solo run that showed his range. His 1992 debut Reel to Reel came out the same year Sean Combs brought him in to collaborate with Mary J. Blige on her debut What's the 411?, where the title track, co written by Puba, hit number one on the R&B charts. He kept the catalog growing across the decades, dropping Understand This in 2001, Retroactive in 2009 with production from Q Tip and Large Professor among others, and Black from the Future in 2016. He also turned up on the heavyweight posse cut Fresh alongside KRS One, Big Daddy Kane and Cormega, which is exactly the kind of company that puts his reputation in context.
