About
Also known as: Groove Collection
Groove Collective has always operated at the intersection of jazz, funk, hip hop, and Latin rhythms, treating the bandstand more like a dance floor than a concert stage. Formed in New York in 1990, the ten piece outfit signed to Reprise Records after producer Gary Katz caught an early show and immediately wanted in. Their sound draws on bebop, Afro pop, old school hip hop, and classic soul, often in the same track. Bassist and co founder Jonathan Maron once summed it up perfectly: the goal was always to replicate what a great DJ does over the course of a night, pulling together wildly different styles until they become one thing. That ambition carried them through a solid run of albums and some notable moments, including a spot on the Red Hot Organization's Stolen Moments compilation alongside Herbie Hancock and Roy Ayers, a record Time magazine called Album of the Year. They also charted with a funked up cover of the Beatles' 'I Want You (She's So Heavy)' in 1996. Their 2005 album People People Music Music earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.
