About
Gunship lean hard into 1980s nostalgia, and they do it with a level of commitment that goes well beyond aesthetic window dressing. The British synthwave trio, built around Dan Haigh, Alex Westaway and Alex Gingell, draws on vintage film soundtracks, video game music and retrofuturistic visuals to create something that feels genuinely rooted in that era rather than just borrowing its surface. Their music videos span stop motion, claymation and 8 bit animation, and one of their logos was modelled directly after the Cannon Group film studio. Their 2023 album Unicorn is their third full release on their own label, Horsie in the Hedge. Beyond their own records, Gunship pop up everywhere across the synthwave scene. They appeared in the documentary The Rise of the Synths alongside John Carpenter, have collaborated with Carpenter Brut, Dance with the Dead and Miami Nights 1984, and covered tracks by The Beatles, Tears for Fears and T'Pau along the way. Westaway came up through rock band Fightstar before this project, but Gunship sits in a very different sonic universe, one built around a formidable collection of synthesizers including Roland Juno 106 units, Moog Minimoogs and various Oberheim gear.
