About
The Gurdjieff Folk Instruments Ensemble brings together Armenia's finest traditional musicians to perform the spiritual and folk compositions of George I. Gurdjieff, the early 20th century mystic teacher whose travels across Armenia, Greece, Assyria, Arabia, Kurdistan and the Caucasus fed a remarkable body of music. Founded in 2008 and led by Levon Eskenian, the ensemble performs on instruments including duduk, oud, kamancha, santur and tombak, giving Gurdjieff's pieces an authentically Eastern sound that feels both ancient and alive. Their debut album Music of Georges I. Gurdjieff, released on ECM Records, put them firmly on the world music map. It picked up the Armenian National Music Award for Best Folk Music Album in 2011 and the Dutch Edison Award for Best World Music Album in 2012, and earned enthusiastic coverage from outlets ranging from Australian Broadcasting Corporation Classic FM to Songlines magazine.
