About
Also known as: Dudamel
Gustavo Dudamel is the Venezuelan conductor who ended up leading Star Wars: The Force Awakens, or at least its opening and end titles, at the request of John Williams himself. He has been the music director of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra since 1999 and spent years at the helm of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He also played the 2016 Super Bowl alongside Coldplay, Beyoncé and Bruno Mars with Youth Orchestra Los Angeles. His career moves quickly. He won the Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition in Germany in 2004, drew the attention of Simon Rattle and Claudio Abbado, and debuted at La Scala in 2006. In 2017 he became the youngest conductor to lead the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Day Concert. Later came stints at the Metropolitan Opera and the Opéra National de Paris. In 2026 he took over as Music and Artistic Director of the New York Philharmonic, the first Latin American in that job.
