About
Gwilym Simcock operates in a territory where jazz and classical music genuinely blur together, and he does it with a fluency that has earned him some serious attention. The Welsh pianist and composer was the first jazz musician selected for the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme, and in 2008 he was commissioned to write and perform a piano concerto at the Proms with the BBC Concert Orchestra, broadcast live on BBC Two. Chick Corea personally picked him for a solo concert at Klavier Festival Ruhr, and 20,000 copies of that live recording were given away as a cover mount CD in Germany. His trio with James Maddren and Yuri Goloubev has played venues worldwide, and his 2011 album Good Days At Schloss Elmau landed him among the twelve Mercury Music Prize nominees that year. He has also toured with Pat Metheny, played alongside Bill Bruford's Earthworks, and is a founding member of The Impossible Gentlemen. His range goes well beyond the piano too, since he also plays French horn at a high level.
