About

Hamid Motebassem is the man behind Dastan, an ensemble he founded in 1991 that has become one of the standout names in contemporary Persian music. He plays the tar and the setar, two of the central string instruments of the classical Persian tradition, and he works firmly within that classical framework. Over the years he studied with some serious names, including Mohammad Reza Lotfi, Hossein Alizadeh and Hushang Zarif. His compositions reach beyond small chamber settings too. Simorq, drawn from Ferdowsi's Shahnameh, is written for voice, choir and an orchestra of Persian instruments, while Zemzeme haa, which means Whispers, pairs voice with Persian instruments. Born in Mashhad, he has built a career as both a performer and a bandleader.
