Few Turkish pop artists have reinvented themselves as relentlessly as Hande Yener. The Istanbul born singer burst onto the scene with her debut album Senden İbaret in 2000, and through a run of early 2000s records including Sen Yoluna... Ben Yoluma... and Aşk Kadın Ruhundan Anlamıyor she became one of the rare acts in Turkey to sell over a million copies of an album. Her image, bold and constantly shifting, drew frequent comparisons to Madonna. Around 2007 she made a sharp left turn into electronic music with Nasıl Delirdim?, earning critical praise but losing commercial ground, which eventually pushed her back toward pop. The comeback worked: tracks like Ya Ya Ya Ya, Sebastian and Mor from her later albums topped the Turkish charts, and by 2013 her videos were the most viewed by any Turkish artist on YouTube. She has picked up five Golden Butterfly Awards along the way, and became a recognised gay icon in Turkey, at times speaking out in support of LGBT rights.
