About
Polish pianist and composer Hania Derej builds music that sits somewhere between electronic jazz and neoclassical territory, shifting from intense outbursts and ostinato patterns to open, lyrical melodies. Her compositions are autobiographical, drawing on doubt, high points, and the general chaos of a young musician's life. She leads the quintet alongside bassist Mateusz Szewczyk and drummer Gniewomir Tomczyk. Derej studies composition and jazz arrangement at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, and also studies symphonic conducting in Krakow. She took the double Grand Prix at the Ladies' Jazz Festival in Gdynia and has performed at jazz festivals across Europe. Her debut album was released on the Dutch label ZenneZ Records.
