About
Also known as: Hanna Maria Raniszewska
Hania Rani, born Hanna Maria Raniszewska in Gdańsk, is a Polish pianist, composer and singer whose work sits somewhere between classical, jazz, ambient and electronic music, refusing to stay neatly in any one box. Her debut album Esja, a collection of solo piano pieces released in 2019, announced her as a serious voice in contemporary classical music and earned her multiple Fryderyk Awards. She followed it with Home in 2020, then Music for Film and Theatre and Inner Symphonies, a collaboration with cellist Dobrawa Czocher, both in 2021, and Ghosts in 2023. Her most ambitious project to date is the piano concerto Non Fiction, recorded at Abbey Road Studios and released on Decca Records. It was composed partly in response to the discovery of music written by a young prodigy, Josima Feldschuh, during World War II in the Warsaw Ghetto. Beyond the concert hall, ITV commissioned her to write a piece for England's football coverage on ITV Sport in 2024, and she has scored film work including the Piotr Domalewski directed I Never Cry. Her piece Shining, inspired by Steve Reich and Philip Glass, received its Polish premiere at the Grand Theatre in Warsaw.
