Hanne De Backer (BE)

About

Also known as: Hanne Debacker

Hanne De Backer is a Belgian saxophonist who works in the space between improvisation, silence and sound. She plays alongside Casper Van De Velde under the name Gabbro, a project that took the pair to a tiny village of the same name in the Tuscan hills. They wandered around with their instruments, talked to the locals and turned the trip into a half hour film, made with BACKÌ vzw, Kunstencentrum Nona and Ha! Concerts Gent, with support from Flanders State Of The Arts. Live, the music runs on sharp improvisation, wailing saxophones and driving drums, with old speakers that seem to drift around the room. Drummer Oscar Claus joins the two of them on stage, and the set keeps opening up new little worlds, with a faint whiff of Fellini hanging over it all.
