About
HarmonEast Ensemble brings together Western classical music and Ottoman court music, exploring the centuries of mutual influence between the two traditions. Their programme draws on composers from both worlds, including Henry Purcell, Jean Baptiste Lully, Hammamizade Ismail, Dede Efendi, Callisto Guatelli, Kevser Hanım, Şerif Muhittin Targan and Ulvi Cemal Erkin. What makes their concerts distinctive is the format: pieces are interspersed with short stories and contextual explanations, so audiences leave with a sense of the historical moments that shaped the music. The ensemble is made up of internationally trained musicians covering piano, ney (Turkish reed flute), cello, viola and percussion, alongside a historian who handles the narrative and presentation. The combination of scholarship and performance is central to what they do, treating music as a bridge between cultures and making classical repertoire feel genuinely accessible rather than remote.
