About
Founded in 1863, Harmonie St. Michaël van Thorn has grown from its Limburg roots into a symphony wind orchestra with an international reputation. Wind bands and fanfares are a big part of Dutch musical culture, yet they rarely make it into the concert hall, something this ensemble has made a point of changing. Their repertoire mixes established classics with more adventurous fare: Dvořák's Carnival Overture sits alongside Johan de Meij's Casanova, a work steeped in the world of Puccini, and a tango inspired medley by Willem van Merwijk. The orchestra has also championed newer music, performing John Mackey's Symphony No. 2 shortly after its premiere. They regularly perform alongside guest soloists, including celebrated cellist Ella van Poucke.
