About
Also known as: Henri Gabriel Andre Texier
Henri Texier is a French double bassist who taught himself the instrument as a teenager and ended up at the center of French jazz for decades. His first group, formed in the mid 1960s and inspired by Don Cherry and Ornette Coleman, is counted among the earliest expressions of free jazz in France, even though almost nothing of it was recorded. From 1968 to 1972 he played with Phil Woods and his European Rhythm Machine, alongside George Gruntz, Gordon Beck and Daniel Humair. He kept busy through the 1970s working with the likes of John Abercrombie and Didier Lockwood, then formed a quartet with Louis Sclavis in 1982. Together with Aldo Romano and Sclavis he made three albums built around Africa as seen by photographer Guy Le Querrec: Carnet de routes, Suite africaine and African Flashback. As a leader he has put out a long run of records, mostly on Label Bleu, from Izlaz and Colonel Skopje to Sky Dancers, Sand Woman and Heteroklite Lockdown.
