About

Also known as: "Mwandishi" Herbie Hancock, H. Hancock, Hancock, Herbert Hancock, Herbert Jeffrey Hancock

Few pianists have reshaped jazz as many times as Herbie Hancock. He came up fast through Donald Byrd's group and then spent five pivotal years in the Miles Davis Second Great Quintet, where he, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams essentially rewrote what a rhythm section could do. While doing that, he was also recording prolifically for Blue Note, turning out jazz standards like "Cantaloupe Island", "Maiden Voyage", and "Watermelon Man" that players are still quoting today. By the 1970s he had swung hard into funk and electronics, and Head Hunters became one of the best selling jazz albums of its era. Then came "Rockit" in 1983, an electro instrumental built around scratching that landed him on heavy MTV rotation. His 2007 tribute to Joni Mitchell, River: The Joni Letters, won the Grammy Album of the Year. He has 14 Grammys in total, plus an Academy Award, and since 2012 has been a professor at UCLA.
