About

Founded in 1986 by Claudio Abbado and based in Vienna, the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester is one of Europe's most prestigious youth symphony orchestras. What set it apart from the start was its decision to hold open auditions across Eastern Bloc countries, something no youth orchestra had done before. Today more than a hundred musicians from across Europe compete each year through auditions held in over twenty five cities, with jury members drawn from the continent's leading professional orchestras. The repertoire stretches from classical works to contemporary pieces, though the big romantic and late romantic symphonies are very much the heart of it. The orchestra has performed at the Lucerne Festival, the Salzburger Festspiele and the Salzburger Osterfestspiele, and a 2005 tour featuring Richard Strauss's Eine Alpensinfonie with 130 musicians under Franz Welser Möst was a particular highlight. Its alumni list is remarkable too: former members now hold positions in leading European orchestras, and a group of them founded the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in 1997 with Abbado's support.
