About
Few Melbourne bands have had their music picked apart by Beyoncé, Jay Z, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and Anderson Paak, but Hiatus Kaiyote earned that kind of attention by making something genuinely hard to categorise. The quartet, built around singer and guitarist Nai Palm alongside bassist Paul Bender, keyboardist Simon Mavin, and drummer Perrin Moss, blends neo soul, jazz, funk, and psychedelia into something that sits comfortably in none of those boxes. Their debut Tawk Tomahawk landed endorsements from Prince, Erykah Badu, and Questlove, and a reissued version featuring Q Tip on "Nakamarra" earned them a Grammy nomination, the first for an Australian act in an R&B category. Choose Your Weapon followed in 2015 to near universal critical praise, cracking the Billboard 200 and the Top R&B charts in the US. Their 2021 album Mood Valiant, shaped partly by Nai Palm's recovery from breast cancer and the upheaval of the pandemic, pushed deeper into lush, orchestrated territory, with Brazilian arranger Arthur Verocai lending a hand on "Get Sun". Their most recent release, Love Heart Cheat Code, arrived in 2024.
