About
Hirax have been a fixture of the American thrash metal underground since 1984, when vocalist Katon W. De Pena launched the band in the Los Angeles scene and quickly found themselves sharing stages with Metallica, Slayer and Exodus. Their debut full length Raging Violence on Metal Blade Records hit in 1985, followed by the punishingly brief Hate, Fear and Power, a record that crammed eight songs into just 16 minutes. The band dissolved after that, with De Pena briefly running a side project that included future metal luminaries Gene Hoglan and Ron McGovney. After a long hiatus, De Pena brought Hirax back in 2000 and has kept them going through a revolving cast of lineups ever since. 2014's Immortal Legacy on Steamhammer Records gave the band a proper label release, and in 2025 they put out Faster than Death, their first full studio album in over a decade. One of the more unexpected details about their sound: De Pena has cited blues singer Sam Cooke as the greatest vocalist he has ever heard.
