About
Hoketus operated on its own strict terms. Founded in the Netherlands in 1976 by composer Louis Andriessen, the ensemble was built around a mirror structure: two pianos, two Fender Rhodes, two sets of panpipes, two saxophones, two electric bass guitars, and two percussionists, split into equal halves placed as far apart on stage as possible. Everything was amplified loud. Melody was constructed through hocket, a Medieval technique where single notes or chords interlock in alternation between the two groups, leaving no room for individual expression. The result was heavy, dissonant, and deliberately brutal, pulling from hard rock as much as from Stravinsky. Beyond Andriessen's own work, composers like Michael Nyman, Diderik Wagenaar, and Cornelis de Bondt all wrote for the group before it disbanded in 1987.
