HOUSD, short for Half of us Speaks Dutch, is an international jazz quartet that made an immediate impression on the Dutch jazz scene. At the Princess Christina Jazz Concours they swept all three major prizes in one go: the first prize, the audience prize, and the press prize. That kind of debut is pretty hard to argue with. The group brings together Dutch vocalist Gudrun Blok, South Korean pianist Sehee Kim, French bassist Joseph Defromont, and Swedish drummer Olof Nylén. Their sound sits somewhere between vocal jazz tradition and more adventurous territory, drawing on contemporary improvised music and classical influences. The result is a dynamic range that moves between quiet, lyrical passages and high energy solos over infectious grooves.
