Hozan Dino, whose real name is Yusuf Şahin, is a Kurdish musician who writes and composes everything himself, lyrics and music both, in the Kurmanji dialect. That self sufficiency gives his work a personal weight that stands out in Kurdish folk music, and his distinctive voice has earned him a devoted following. His breakout came with his debut album Lê Dayê in 2002, and the song Oy Yarê has stuck around in the Kurdish music scene ever since its release. Based in the Netherlands after seeking asylum there in 1998, Dino continued building his catalogue through the 2000s and 2010s, releasing albums like Çû, Namûs, and Dîsa Çu. His 2020 album Roj and a 2024 clip called Veger show he has kept creating well into recent years. He describes his music as being for people whose love, freedom and happiness have been taken from them, and that sense of solidarity runs through everything he puts out.
