About

Few ensembles have spent as long excavating Renaissance polyphony as the Huelgas Ensemble, the Belgian vocal and instrumental group that conductor Paul Van Nevel founded in 1971. Named after the Codex Las Huelgas, a key manuscript of 13th century polyphonic music, the group has built one of the most extensive discographies in early music, spanning medieval, Renaissance and early baroque repertoire with a particular focus on the Franco Flemish School. Van Nevel's approach to performance is notably distinctive: singers and conductor arrange themselves in a large circle, rotating during both live concerts and studio recordings, with a microphone suspended above the center. That spatial thinking shapes the group's famously rich, enveloping sound. Their catalogue ranges from Josquin and Lassus to rarities like the complete works of Johannes Ciconia, and they have worked with labels including Sony Classical and Harmonia Mundi over decades of recording.
