Turkish clarinetist Hüsnü Şenlendirici has spent decades making the clarinet feel absolutely central to the Turkish music scene, drawing on his Romani heritage to bring a raw, celebratory energy to everything he plays. He fronts several groups, most notably Laço Tayfa, with whom he recorded the beloved album Bergama Gaydası, and his ensemble Sulukule, which keeps traditional belly dancing music alive. His solo work, including The Joy of the Clarinet and the later Hüsn ü Hicaz, shows a musician equally at home in intimate studio settings and on festival stages across the world. His collaborative reach is wide too. He has worked alongside Brooklyn Funk Essentials, shared a stage with Dhafer Youssef and Aytaç Doğan, and accompanied countless Turkish music artists over the years. Whether fusing Romani and Turkish folk traditions or exploring the Aegean soundscape on Ege'nin yanı iki with Trio Chios, Şenlendirici consistently finds new angles on music with deep, centuries old roots.
