Ian Hendrickson Smith is the kind of saxophonist who ends up on everyone's shortlist. The New York based jazz player has shared sessions with Bob Dylan, U2, Lady Gaga, Amy Winehouse, and Ed Sheeran, which tells you something about how versatile he is. He trained in jazz performance at the Manhattan School of Music and is equally comfortable on any saxophone in the family. His most visible gig is with The Roots, the house band on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, a role he stepped into in early 2014. Before that he spent six years as part of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, the soul revivalist outfit that put Daptone Records on the map. It is a career built on being the player that serious artists call first.
