About

Also known as: Lollibob

Ibrahim Maalouf plays a trumpet unlike most others: the quarter tone trumpet his father invented, which unlocks Arabic maqam scales that a standard instrument simply cannot produce. That blend of Arabic melodic sensibility with jazz, funk, and rock textures is the signature of everything he does. Born in Beirut and raised in Paris, he trained at the Conservatoire de Paris and built a reputation as a session player and collaborator before stepping out with his debut solo album Diasporas in 2007. Since then he has worked with an eclectic roster including Sting, Salif Keita, Vanessa Paradis, and Archie Shepp, and has composed for film, choirs, and symphonic orchestras. A real landmark came in 2022 when he became the first Lebanese instrumentalist nominated at the Grammy Awards, recognized for his collaborative album Queen of Sheba with Angélique Kidjo. Quincy Jones spotted him at Montreux in 2017 and became a consistent champion of his music, which says a lot.
