About
Gijs Idema is a Dutch jazz guitarist, composer and educator whose playing draws on the legacies of Joe Pass, Jim Hall and Wes Montgomery. He studied at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam before heading to New York to complete a master's degree at the Manhattan School of Music. His skills have earned him recognition at several competitions, including the Prinses Christina Jazz Concours, the Leidse Jazz Award and the Expression of Art Award. Idema leads his own trio, with bassist Cas Jiskoot among its members, and he teaches at the Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen. He also co leads the Idema/Serierse Quartet alongside vocalist Anna Serierse, Jiskoot and drummer Tim Hennekes. That group recorded the album Serenade in Blue at the Roode Bioscoop in Amsterdam, presenting fresh arrangements of American Songbook standards in which Serierse's voice weaves together with Idema's guitar lines as an equal instrumental voice rather than a conventional lead.
