Winning first prize at the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in Utrecht in 1996 put Igor Roma firmly on the map, and the jury that year was so impressed they chose not to award a second prize at all. Born in Baden, Switzerland, Roma is an Italian classical pianist whose concerts are centred largely in the Netherlands, though his career has taken him to Italy, the United States, South Africa, China and beyond, performing with orchestras like the Rotterdam Philharmonic, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, and the New World Symphony of Miami Beach. What makes Roma interesting beyond the competition circuit is his appetite for the unusual. His repertoire stretches from Bach to Messiaen and includes rarely heard works by Szymanowski, Kurtag and Charles Valentin Alkan, a composer he champions with particular conviction. He recorded Alkan's Etude Op. 39 No. 12, known as Aesop's Feast, one of the most technically demanding pieces ever written for piano. He has released recordings on Challenge Records, sits on competition juries, and teaches at piano academies in Imola, Maastricht and Adria.
