About
Named after a 17th century opera by Antonio Cesti, Il Pomo d'Oro is a period ensemble that has built a serious reputation for historically informed performances of Baroque and Classical repertoire since its founding in 2012. The orchestra works both with its own lead violinists, Federico Guglielmo and Zefira Valova, and with a rotating cast of guest conductors, most notably Maxim Emelyanychev, who has served as chief conductor since 2016. Their discography leans heavily into Handel, with recordings of Tamerlano, Partenope, Ottone, Serse, Agrippina, and Theodora among the highlights, plus a deep dive into Stradella with their recording of Doriclea. Vivaldi concerti, Neapolitan arias, and rarities like Vinci's Catone in Utica round out a catalogue that rewards anyone willing to dig past the obvious Baroque hits.
